What is it?

An interactive day with Crafts Council UK and business consultant Alison Branagan to introduce you to managing your business finances; tools to calculate effective and competitive pricing for your work and provide you with some financial jargon know how.

This workshop will also help you to cost and price work by understanding the valuing of your time.

Who is it for?

Please note: This workshop is for Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole based artists, makers and creatives only

  • Newcomers to fine art, craft and making looking to build a business out of their making and need support on where to start.
  • Early career makers who are looking for tools to structure an effective business plan.
  • Mid-career makers looking for a spark of inspiration to overcome hurdles facing their practice.

  • An overview of how to calculate your earning potential through time management with realistic production time
  • An introduction to accounting toolkits
  • An introduction to cash flow forecasts
  • An introduction to how to price your work more effectively

Who is speaking?

  • Alison Branagan is an author and visual arts consultant and an associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins. Over the last decade she has written several business start-up and enterprise books and has studied different approaches to teaching business theory and enterprise skills. She has also devised and facilitated upon many enterprise projects for universities and business support organisations. Entrepreneurship for Creatives Summer School is one such course at Central Saint Martins. She has a Masters degree in Applied Art and Visual Culture, is an Associate of the Institute of Consulting, a Member of the Society of Authors and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She is also an associate of The Design Trust and has recently been a mentor for the Craft’s Council Hothouse Programme.
  • Crafts Council Talent Development manager Caroline Jackman, has over 20 years’ experience in working in the arts and working to support the business and creative development of artists and makers from amateurs to established professionals.

What to bring


  • Notebook and pen
  • 3 images of your work, ideally printed (don’t rely on Wifi)


  • Calculator (calculator Ap on your phone will do)
  • Any past records of your pricing or accounts linked to you practice. (not essential especially if you are just starting out)

Laptops and iPads are welcome but not essential

If you are a Sole Trader please bring your Unique Tax Reference Number, if you own a registered company/organisation please bring your registration number.

We will be providing lunch and refreshments, please be sure that you let us know your dietary requirements on the Eventbrite Event Registration.

How to book

  • Spaces are limited, only one place available per business
  • If you book and find that you are unable to attend, please cancel your ticket as soon as possible and at least 48 hours prior to the workshop. This allows us to release the booking to others that are on a waiting list
