Founded in 1924, by such luminaries as Augustus John and Henry Lamb, Poole & East Dorset Art Society (PEDAS) continues to thrive with over 100 members and manages The Gallery Upstairs at Upton Country Park, Poole, Dorset. This gallery belongs to the Borough of Poole and it exhibits artists in all media and of all abilities from Dorset and nationally.

Upon meeting with Culture+ advisors it became clear that the organisation required a formal infrastructure to enable it to access future funding and to show to the world that it was a constituted organisation and provided services that were of benefit to the wider community.

Additionally, it was also time for PEDAS to renew its contract with the borough and after looking at all possible organisational structures and with advice from Culture+ PEDAS; 95 years after its conception; has successfully registered as charity 2019.

Spokesperson for the Gallery Upstairs, Liz Magee, commented: “We are delighted by the news that we have been granted charitable status.  This will enable us to move forward in our mission to bring art to the community and enable local artists and craftsmen to share their work in an attractive and well-managed gallery”.
