14 participants will build a tiny house for a rough sleeper and learn what it takes to construct it sustainably and ethically.

Bridport Town Council, Common Ground and the Arts Development Company are working with the Turner-prize winning architects, Assemble Studio, to create designs for affordable housing using sustainable materials grown in Dorset.

The project coordinator, Tim Crabtree, of Wessex Community Assets, explains:

“The tiny house courses are an opportunity to prototype these new designs. When completed, the tiny house will be donated to a homelessness charity to provide accommodation for an entrenched rough sleeper.”

This course is also designed to give participants the skills and experience to get employment in the local construction industry. Tim Crabtree continues:

“Participants will work with six other trainees on one of two five-day courses, and also attend three one-day sessions where they will learn additional skills as well as receiving advice on future training, employment, or business start-up opportunities.”

About the Course

Seven participants will attend a five-day course and three full-day sessions where they will learn additional skills and advice on future training, employment, or business start-up opportunities.

Participants will be prototyping a new tiny home design and, when completed, the tiny house will be donated to a homelessness charity to provide accommodation for a rough sleeper.

Two course dates are available; Monday 21st September – Friday 25th September or Monday 28th September – Friday 2nd October. Anyone living in Dorset can apply, and those over 50, who identify as female, have a disability, are unemployed or are of a Black, Asian or minority ethnicity are particularly encouraged to apply.

The course is taking place in a workspace provided by local farmer Victor Crutchley in West Dorset, with timber sourced and processed from his own woodlands.
