Ancient Technology Centre
“Metal detecting” Lance, the hero of Mackenzie Crook’s modern classic Detectorists, declares “is the closest you’ll get to time travelling.” Lance had clearly never been to Cranborne’s Ancient Technology Centre.
Nestled in the historic village of Cranborne, this hidden gem is a haven for history enthusiasts and curious minds. From the Neolithic era to the Vikings, the dedicated staff and volunteers meticulously recreate buildings and experiences that offer a genuine journey through the ages. The site serves as a living testament to the civilisations and cultures that once called Dorset home.
The Centre allows children to engage in seasonal and sustainably resourced activities. Following processes unchanged for thousands of years, students gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by their ancestors. A local school even had the opportunity to get hands-on experience constructing a roundhouse.
Celebrating Volunteer Excellence
Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Ancient Technology Centre, contributing their time, skills, and passion to bring history to life. Their unwavering dedication has not gone unnoticed, with accolades including the prestigious Queen's Award for Volunteering and, more recently, the Princess Royal Training Award. It's no wonder that weekend visitor numbers almost doubled in 2023; a testament to the captivating experiences crafted by these committed individuals.
Open Weekends and School Visits
The centre opens its doors to the public three weekends a year, treating visitors to a mix of reenactment groups, combat displays, storytelling, music, heritage skill demonstrations, and engaging "have a go" activities. For over 25 years, the Ancient Technology Centre has welcomed school visits, providing thousands of children with memorable journeys into the past. Remarkably, about 80% of building and maintenance projects are completed by visiting groups, offering a unique hands-on learning experience.
